32M says it will start implementing the program on August 1, 2017. The company adds that it expects at least 50 employees to voluntarily accept the implant. The US-based micro market technology leader is collaborating with BioHax International on the project. RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) chips can identify stored information through electromagnetic fields. Chip implants like this use near-field communication (NFC) to connect with other devices. Three Square Market says the implants will give employees easier access in the workplace. The RFID chips will be placed between the thumb and forefinger under the skin. Implanting the chip takes seconds.
32M provides micro markets for organizations. A micro market is a small convenience store placed in a break room of a company. It is a self-service location that gives workers access to products to buy. The company says installing micro markets boosts morale and productivity. In its press release, the company said the chip implant program is a logical next step: “We foresee the use of RFID technology to drive everything from making purchases in our office break room market, opening doors, use of copy machines, logging into our office computers, unlocking phones, sharing business cards, storing medical/health information, and used as payment at other RFID terminals. Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.” commented 32M CEO, Todd Westby. Using implanted chips is becoming increasingly common in Europe, although the United States is not adopting the technology as rapidly. “The international market place is wide-open and we believe that the future trajectory of total market share is going to be driven by who captures this arena first,” said 32M COO Patrick McMullan. “Europe is far more advanced in mobile and chip technology usage than the U.S. and we are thrilled with the growth opportunity this enhancement will bring to us. Thanks to our market partners in Sweden, we met this innovative company and look forward to working with them to take our market share to another level.”
Chip Party
32M wants to use RFID technology to improve its checkout experience. The company says NFC implants add another payment and identification method. Employees will be given their chips at a special event called the “chip party” at the Three Square Market headquarters in River Falls, Wisconsin.
