We are not talking about smartphones, so Qualcomm can rest easy. Instead, it is Intel that is in the crosshairs once again. The Ryzen mobile processors are designed for premium 2-in-1, ultrathin laptops, and convertibles. At the moment, this market is tied up by Intel, which produces for devices such as Microsoft’s Surface devices. AMD’s Ryzen mobile chips are comprised of “Zen” x86 cores and Radeon “Vega” graphics in a System-on-Chip design. The company says the Ryzen 7 2700U has a 15W processor TDP and delivers 44% more multi-threaded CPU performance and 161% more graphics capabilities compared to Intel rivals. “We promised to bring innovation and competition back to every segment of the PC market in 2017, and today marks the fulfillment of that promise for consumer notebooks following our successful roll-out across the consumer, commercial and high-end desktop markets earlier this year,” said Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group, AMD. “Ryzen mobile processors offer leadership performance for everyday activities, multi-tasking, and advanced workloads alike, all while enabling amazing battery life. We are pleased to deliver the world’s fastest processor for ultrathin notebooks, offering consumers the opportunity to get the most out of their digital lives through our OEM partners’ notebook designs.”
Availability
Windows OEMs are already on board with the new processors. Acer, HP, and Lenovo will be debuting computing products running the Ryzen mobile processors. AMD believes other OEMs will also make devices, which will be released in early 2018. Ryzen has been important for AMD and has allowed the company to more directly keep with Intel. Just yesterday, the company announced that the series of chips was responsible for its first profit in years.
