According to the announcement, Qualcomm will bring its 5G technology to mid-tier devices as well as high-end. The company says the coverage will be part of the Snapdragon 7 and Snapdragon 6 CPU series’. Both the new SoC’s will be available in devices from smartphone partners in 2020. Looking at the Snapdragon 7 series first, Qualcomm has developed the 5G platform on a 7nm process. Among the features includes is Snapdragon Elite Gaming and the company’s AI Engine. Furthermore, the 7 series will function across all regions and frequencies. Qualcomm did not offer any details on precise launch. However, the company did say smartphone OEMs like LG, Motorola, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, Vivo, and HMD Global have already committed to building devices running the processor. “Qualcomm Technologies delivered the world’s first and most advanced 5G mobile platform including the first comprehensive Modem-RF System to accelerate 5G commercialization in 2019,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “And we are uniquely positioned to accelerate 5G commercialization to scale globally with our OEM and operator customers with expanded mobile platform offerings across our Snapdragon 8 Series, 7 Series and 6 Series in 2020.”

Huawei Kirin 990

Earlier this week, Huawei announced its Kirin 990 processor, a CPU that is available as a 5G variant. During The launch, Huawei claimed the 990 is the most powerful 5G SoC in the world. “Kirin 990 (5G) is the world’s first 5G System-on-a-Chip (SoC), and it will enable end-users to access superb 5G connectivity experience one step ahead in the first year of 5G commercialization,” Huawei Consumer Business CEO Richard Yu says. It also has some other “first” accolades, such as being the first full-frequency 5G SoC, and the first mobile SoC will over 10 billion transistors.
